Hello lovelies,
Feeling the warm rays of the sun on your skin can be a wonderful feeling. But while we long for a sun-kissed complexion, we should remember that overexposure to the sun poses serious risks to our health. Skin cancer, premature ageing and sunburn are just some of the possible consequences.
But there is an alternative that is not only safer, but also provides a healthy glow all year round: self-tanners. In this article, I'll explain why self-tanners are the better choice, especially compared to sun exposure, and why they can even be used during pregnancy.
The main argument for using self-tanners is their lower risk of skin cancer compared to sun exposure. UV rays, whether from the sun or from sunbeds, can increase the risk of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the dangerous malignant melanoma.
Another advantage of self-tanners is that they are safe to use during pregnancy. Expectant mothers are often concerned about whether chemical ingredients in cosmetic products could harm their unborn child. Unlike sunlight, self-tanners do not penetrate deep into the skin and therefore pose no risk to the fetus. Nevertheless, it is advisable to speak to a doctor before using it during pregnancy to dispel any concerns.
We spoke to Prof. Dr. med. Dietrich Abeck and received his agreement that he would always prefer self-tanning products:
"Self-tanners are medically unproblematic and, unlike solariums and natural UV radiation, do not increase the risk of skin cancer. I can speak on behalf of my colleagues here: we would all be delighted if the tan color of our patients could be attributed solely to the use of self-tanners in the future!"
